Experiment Advice

The first thing to keep in mind when writing free verse poetry is the topic, idea, or message that the poem is going to convey. This is crucial because so much of the writing process in this genre is subjective to the author. Therefore, it is imperative to have a central focus as you write. The style of the poem is also crucial to consider. Will the poem contain a specific rhyme scheme or meter? How long will the lines be? Will there be multiple stanzas? These are four of what amount to a multitude of creative decisions that the author faces. It is key that at least a few of these are answered prior to beginning. That does not mean that they cannot change later; however, it is easier to start creating with a little bit of framework in place.

I found that imagery was one of the most effective tools of free verse poets. Thus, I would advise

aspiring poets in this genre to consider making it an integral part of their own work. I stress this because the poems that invoked the most emotion in me were able to create pictures in my head through specific word choice. This allowed me to focus more on the writing and less on imagining what I felt was going on or being conveyed in the poem. Imagery benefits the reader and makes for an extremely memorable piece of writing. I would be remiss not to note that this is a personal preference. There are truly no rules when composing free verse poetry. Therefore, it is entirely up to each author whether they want to make vivid imagery a focal point of their works.
